Doctor visit
The dr. adjusted the immobilizer to make it more comfortable - not that comfort is a word I’d use with immobilizer. He says I really need to relax that shoulder - not tense up - even as he begins to twist it cause I think it might hurt. Easier said than done! I can release the arm and let it dangle every hour for 10 minutes to unkink it. 3 more weeks in it.

Previous entry: Attention Kate!
Stay in the immobilizer. Had a 3cm rotator cuff tear, several mm of dead bone shaved off till he reached bloody bone in order to secure anchor, bicep tear that he repaired and then detached from shoulder socket and reattached to humerus (arm bone), did something to tricep so it would work with new bicep location, worked on areas of inflammation, released compressed nerve - think that’s all!
Apparently under “happy” gas before the real anesthetic I talked with him about doing the mini. Wonder what else I talked about? That’s the real report I’d like - not the medical!
Carol H - so when are you having your hip done?

wow sounds like you had the full works. Did he say why your shoulder was such a wreck and if there is something you can do (or not do) to avoid this on your other shoulder?

When am I having my hip done? Actually it would be both hips - but - since I have been back to faiathfully exercising 4-5 days a week at Curves, both hips feel better!! So until the pain is so great (a la your shoulder) I will not go under the knife!!
Off to Greenbriar in a minute, then to get my hair cut. I’m almost done with my tape transfer. I’ve used nearly 200 DVD +R disks!

I’ll ask at next appt. - tears are rather common - repetitive motions and age - although it isn’t as if i play tennis or anything! The dead bone - traumatic injury that causes decreased blood flow - but radiation is also listed as cause when i googled it. my shoulder wasn’t in the direct field of radiation but who knows if some “escaped” to the shoulder. Soft bone… i’ll have to ask him. didn’t see signs of arthritis though! he is concerned about the chronic inflammation. sees no reason that i won’t be as good as new by sumer of 2011.
be sure to slowly warm up your muscles before you get fully into the exercise and do stretch after your exercise carol - that’s what prevents injury.
when and where is the next cc?

Maureen, CC is on the 18th at Barb’s (it’s always on the Home Page if the date has been set).
I start out on the machines and recovery boards slow, then build up to full steam before I start to back it down as I finish. Then I go through a routine of about 10 stretching positions when I am done on the machines, before I leave Curves.
Steve is headed to the doctor next week - finally - he fell on the driveway almost 4 weeks ago and has walked like a sidewinder hunchback of Notre Dame ever since. He can’t straighten up his back without intense pain. No exageration. He kept thinking it would improve. Between the two of us it takes an edict from the Pope (ha!) to get us to go to the doctor.

I guess most of us do have doctor avoidance traits. I usually wait until I have three complaints to make an appointment or some really huge problem. I hope Steve’s back problem is a passing thing. I am fortunate that I haven’t had any significant recurrences of my back issues. At one point (10 years ago) I couldn’t lean over to close the car door and would make the kids run around to close it for me. I avoid sitting in one postion for too long and I do back stretches frequently.
Bill and I had lunch at Marquette Manor today. We then had a tour. I am not ready to move in but want to know what my options might be in the future. The new building is quite a bit more $$$ than the old but only the new building allows pets. That building also has underground parking. The old building apartments are being upgraded as they turn over and I thought they were really pretty.

So do you have to stay in for three more weeks or is the immobilizer mobile?
