Movies

Not that I’ll ever be the movie connoisseur that Carol Fay is ... but I have been watching several.  I would recommend Departures - Japanese movie with subtitles (sorry Carol Fay).  A very touching story about the Japanese ritual of preparing a body for burial, love, forgiveness, honor, death.  It won several Academy Awards - not that I use that as a criteria for what movies I like.  The other movie is Man on Wire.  I only started to watch this and knew that Dave would also like it so I’ll wait and watch it with him.  It is also foreign - French although there is some English spoken it is with a heavy French accent.  What makes this film interesting is that it also shows the building of the World Trade Center as this man is also building is “career” as a high wire walker.  He eventually does walk between the 2 towers in 1974.

A book I’d recommend is Invisible: a memoir by Hughes de Montalembert.. blinded during a robbery attempt in NYC this French painter and photographer learns to move forward - traveled solo around the world, transition he under went…philosophical statements.  Not in paperback yet - good book club read.

On to next movie - or nap

Previous entry: Since When?

Have seen both of those movies, and unlike CarolFay, I gravitate toward anything WITH subtitles.  I especially like Chinese films in the Mandarin dialect - like listening to music being spoken.

The book sounds good Maureen.  I have been on a Willa Cather kick - rereading Oh, Pioneers! and My Antonia.  Have a stack of “disposable” paperbacks to bring to Hawaii.

If anyone has any movie recommendations - from fluff to whatever let me know so that I can see if the library has them.

Now just one minute! Sub Titles aren’t my favorite but I did enjoy Crouching Tiger, Inglorious Bastards, Water for Chocolate and Life is beautiful. I did enjoy Amelia, over the weekend. Maureen, how did you like Hurt Locker? I din’t like it that well. I think I am really tiring of war pictures.

Hurt Locker wasn’t the face paced action adventure of the traditional war movies.  I imagine though it was more accurate portrayal of the day in day out, and sometimes monotonous hours of a soldier in Iraq.

If you come across any other movies that you would recommend and if it is convenient would you check them out and drop them off? Thanks.

I have a Pacer game tonight. Will you be able to go to Barb’s on Thursday? I can see what comes in and drop it off after work. If you won’t be there I can see what we have Friday and drop off movies if they appeal to you. I’ll put them on the CC website before I check them out to make sure you want them and haven’t seen them already.

Carol - when do you leave for Hawaii?  Are you going to CC?  If so would you be able to give me a ride?  If not ...anyone else want to see me enough to give me a ride?

CarolFay,  no plans for Friday.  Thanks

Maureen, we leave 8 am Friday, back on March 6.  I am not going to CC at Barb’s, I think I told her at Raquel’s (after you had left) but just in case, please remind her.

I admired “The Hurt Locker” very much.  From what I have read, it is as you said Maureen, a very accurate portrayal.

We watched “Bright Star” last week, about the short life of the poet Keats.  Excellent.  If I had more time, I could give quite a few recommendations.  I’ll see how it goes the rest of today and tomorrow.  (cleaning and laundry today, plus the girls come for supper and then church)

Pike has two copies of Bright Star checked out. One was due the 14th and one due Friday. I’ll keep an eye out. I’m going to Nora, in 30 min. for a Focus Group. If I make it to CC, Thursday, I give more info. Then tonight is a Pacer game. This is the game I won two free tickets that are a little better than my two season tickets.
