Remember the day

Have been reading some interesting reflections from school friends on Facebook today, thinking back to the day when JFK was assassinated.  What one of us remembers, another one expands on - but what is eerie is that we all basically have the exact memories of that afternoon, and what we were doing when we heard the news. Our 7th grade Algebra teacher,  Mr. Reynolds (not the most serious or credible teacher if I remember correctly) came in to our class, first one of the afternoon, and said “Did you hear President Kennedy was shot?” - I remember waiting to hear the punchline to this very sick joke. So very sadly, it was not a joke. My family spent the entire weekend in front of the black and white TV set. Then on Sunday morning after church I was with my dad in Lilja’s Drugstore, buying the Sunday paper and that’s where we heard that Ruby shot Lee Harvey Oswald. It was a growing up time for me, being sad beyond words for this very grown-up tragedy. My eyes still tear up when I think of this.

I was in 5th grade in a Catholic school in Cumberland, MD when the principle came over the PA.  We didn’t have a tv at home so my Mom took the older ones to a motel where we checked in for the day and watched the funeral.

I have memories of traveling to school and hearing the news. You didn’t have a TV?

We didn’t get a tv until I was a sophomore in HS and only then because my grandmother came to live with us.  We had a small black and white tv - in her bedroom - one way to be sure we kept her company!  We watched the moon landing on it and I can remember my grandmother’s disbelief - she thought they made it up.  By senior year we had our own tv.  My mom used to rent tv’s at 7-11 when I was in 7th and 8th grade when my Dad was out of town - especially during the winters in VA.

I remember Mrs. Trinks coming in to the classroom and telling us the news.  I remember watching on TV over and over again.  I remember staying up late to watch the moon landing also.
