Scare

My sister called tonight ... the director of the assisted living place where my Dad is was driving home from work and saw my Dad in his wheelchair zooming along the sidewalk about 1 block or 2 from St. Edwards.  She called the staff who came and got him.  When asked where he was going, he replied - to get rims for my tires.  They wanted to take him to the hospital to test whether he had a stroke or not but my sister said no - what’s the point.  She and my brother did talk to my dad - he was aware enough to understand what they were saying about the possibility of testing and having to go to skilled nursing. Kitty told him St. Ed’s would be asking him questions tomorrow to assess his mental state.  Dad asked what kind of questions.  So Kit gave him a pre-test… he didn’t know the year, name of president and couldn’t name his children without receiving hints.

So ... we’ll see how alert he is tomorrow.  If he goes in for testing and needs to go to skilled care then it would hospice - and coming off his meds.  I imagine that coming off his meds - high blood pressure, blood thinner, etc - will shorten a hospice stay.

So ... we wait.

My dad’s electric wheelchair privileges have been revoked and due to his lack of upper arm strength , weight, and arthritis since he can not maneuver a manual chair he is totally dependent.  He is still for now in assisted living and blood work, urine tests and a Cat scan will be ordered to see if anything can explain his episode.

He still has his humor ... before the meeting he said to my brother and sister… To those who are about to die, I salute you - or whatever was said to the gladiators.

Sorry to hear this Maureen, I’m sure you feel quite sad and helpless.  Will you be able to go up to see him?  Maybe you will have an update at CC tomorrow night.  Keeping your dad and your family in my prayers.

Maureen this is got to be so difficult and really sudden. Has your dad been on any new medications? Could he be dehydrated? Those things are reversible. But it does sound like you and your family may have to be making the hard decisions soon.

I will be at CC for a short time.

Dave and I are going to Akron Friday morning.  Turns out this is also a good weekend for one of my brothers from CA to come.  Kevin is off this weekend so he is going to try to get there also.  So if Kevin, Dave, and I are going and Joe will be there ... Rachel will come but since she is being cautious with her car she is going to see if her cousin who lives in Cincinnati wants to go also.  Big families ....

That will be a great comfort to have so many family there.  Hope you get the answers you need to make decisions.
