To Minnesota and back

I enjoyed my week up North.  The leaves were still pretty in southern Minnesota, the farmers were all out in their fields harvesting and the snow wasn’t too bothersome!

As to the main reason I came to Minnesota - The Little House on the Prairie at the Ordway Theatre in Saint Paul - it was absolutely wonderful!!  It was fun to see Melissa Gilbert (Laura on the TV production of the 70’s and 80’s) as “Ma” and all of the other characters were perfectly cast.  All had lovely voices, the songs and orchestra, the minimal scenery, the costumes - all of it just great.  It was so touching to see the portrayal of those actual people and events - I was in tears on and off from the raising of the curtain.  Having read everything that Laura (and also everything of her daughter Rose) every wrote, seeing many photographs, and visiting the sod house site on Plum Creek in Walnut Grove, MN - I think it was just too touching.  I think the closest to Indy the production will come is St. Louis in November.  Saint Paul was the premiere city.  And the days with my folks were just wonderful too - full of conversation, good meals, some sorting and sifting, and just plain taking it easy.  My folks took me up to the airport yesterday(2 hours from New Ulm) for my 3:30 pm flight home.  I am “Silver Elite” on Delta/NW so I got upgraded to First Class when I came up, but I wasn’t as lucky on my return trip!  At least the pilot remembered to land here in Indy:)

sounds like you had an awesome time. I used to read from Little House to my third grade classes. My favorite scene was when the two young sisters whipped up a complete spur of the moment dinner complete with fresh biscuits for visitors. I remember thinking that they did better than I could.

I’m thrilled you had a good visit and a great time. I’m also happy you made it back to Indy!! I enjoyed Little House show but I never read the books.

I didn’t watch the TV show but a few times. It bothered me too much, the liberties that were taken with the facts of the Ingalls family and their lives.  But I do appreciate the exposure it gave to a wonderful ( and likely typical of the times) story of a pioneer family.  My 5th grade teacher (harsh Mrs. Nelson, who I now look back and appreciate!) read every book in the series to us that year. I went on to re-read them as a teen, and three more times when I read the entire series to Matthew, then to Taylor and now to Delaney.  I just started with Ella (a little later than I had hoped) and she loves them too. Delaney has been to Walnut Grove with me, and I hope to take Ella next summer.  OK, stop me!  I could go on and on about how these books and others that Laura wrote have given me a sense of thankfulness for what I have, and the comfort that I live in.  CarolFay, it’s never too late to read the books!

I agree that an CarolFaye would appreciate a series with such personal details of history. You granddaughters are so lucky to have you give them such a sense of history. I am not sure that teachers are able to take the time to read to their classes nor that they would choose these books.

Anyone want to go with me to Butler Tuesday night? There is a free program at Clowes on a living garden. Let me know if you want to go.

Yes, 5th grade in 1962 is a far cry from what goes on today (that’s the grade Delaney is in now, and few similarities exist.

I have read about that lecture Susan.  I would love to attend, but Tuesday night is Poetry Plus (at Pilgrim) and I am presenting the Sonnets of Shakespeare (along with Gloria).  Should you or any one else decide on Shakespeare, we would love to have you attend!  7:30 pm in the library at Pilgrim.

Our Shakespeare presentation for tomorrow night has been canceled and will be next April instead. Gloria got an unexpected houseful of company and this just seemed like the right thing to do.  So I may show up at the lecture, not sure yet!
