Weekend and such

Tonight is Dave’s office party at the Arts Garden. Saturday, Rachel and Nick are picking up Aunt Gloria and we are going to Yuletide at the Symphony followed by dinner at Scholar’s Inn. Rachel thought it would be nice to put up the tree with Nick here so - we will.  We have offered to Rachel that we can drive to Cincinnati for Christmas since she has made the drive here so often lately - she is considering it but she likes the tradition of midnight Mass at St. Monica.  She will also be coming back New Year’s Eve weekend - if Kevin and Jen make it in.  I think we will wait until then to open our stockings.  I quoted the line from the movie The Grinch (something about Christmas isn’t about the presents) when Rachel asked - what will we do on Christmas?

Hope everyone is staying warm!

Dave’s party sounds nice with the Arts Garden setting.  And I bet your Saturday festivities will be great too -  your family is expanding!  Oh Maureen, just double up on the gifts - you can throw the lesson from the Grinch out the window when your darling young daughter asks you what you will do on Christmas.  True, it’s not about how many or how big the gifts are.  But it is about “gifts” without a doubt.  In the words of the very wise Norwegian Nobel prize author Sigrid Undset (she wrote the Kristin Lavransdatter trilogy):

“And when we give each other Christmas gifts in His name, let us remember that He has given us the sun and the moon and the stars, and the earth with its forests and mountains and oceans—and all that lives and move upon them. He has given us all green things and everything that blossoms and bears fruit and all that we quarrel about and all that we have misused—and to save us from our foolishness, from all our sins, He came down to earth and gave us Himself.”

The problem isn’t giving the gifts ... it is coming up with the idea for the gift! Of course there is always a new car…

And ...it amazes me what a resource you are for literature.

Hopefully Elliott and I will be able to celebrate Chanukah with Matt and Bobby, next week. Bobby is in Boston and Matt is working all weekend. Matt and Jen never did come over last night, for the first night. Elliott wasn’t home and they had plans with another couple. Jen left today. She will be back on Dec. 30th so hopefully we will get together. Rachel is going to her parents but she did text me ( that’s right we are now texting and I love it! I just got a new phone with a keyboard!!), last night, to wish me Happy Chanukah and ask when we will be home
