RSVP for Thursday
Tuesday, October 30th, 2007Sad news in Munster
Thursday, October 25th, 2007BArb just called me about two tragedies, my sister told me about last night, Two male teens, age 19 and 17, from two different families, committed suicide within the last week. The seventeen year old’s Mom is friends with my sister and her name is also Nancy. The Mom had to cut him down and my sister helped clean the room. Nancy went to the funeral yesterday and today she ran to South Bend for another funeral. Her sister-in-law’s Dad fell in his garage, hti his head and died, Tuesday night! Nancy told me she can’t wait to get away and go with me to Phoenix!!
Sorry for lurking…
Wednesday, October 24th, 2007I have been doing that - reading all the latest here, but not taking the time to comment or post! Seems like I have been either having company or traveling for the past month. I flew home Monday night. The reunion banquet for the USS Minneapolis survivors of WWII was very touching - many of the sailors in their late 80’s and several 90 +. I felt fortunate to be a part of that group for the evening. The Minnesota History Center had been interviewing and filming all week in preparation for a film and exhibit to be opened in the spring - a greatest generation type thing. Steve flew home that Sunday and I went on down to New Ulm to be with my folks then all last week. Spent tons of time scanning old photograph albums beginning with my parents marriage in 1948 and stopped at mid-1971 for now. Made copies of the cd’s for my sisters and brother who came to spent Friday at home. Just the original 6 of us - my folks were in their glories. Also took a quick run back up to the cities with my older sister to visit Caitlin and Mike! So, it was a full week and now I am back in Indpls. Last night Matthew and Davie came up from Atlanta and will paint the inside of the house they are renting before the movers arrive next Monday. Today Delaney and Ella came over to that house and boy were they surprised. Lots of jumping up and down and generally being excited beyond belief!
I met my Greenbriar student at an Oasis breakfast there on the Friday we were flying up to Minnesota - nice 2nd grade boy who says he likes to read chapter books. I was all set to have a student who was not yet reading, so I will need to rethink my plans a bit. I will start working with him next Tuesday.
I have been conscripted to help paint, so I guess the yard work will have to wait…can’t believe how green most of the trees still are anyway.
Arizona Trip and CC
Wednesday, October 24th, 2007Friday My sister and I are going to Phoenix and staying at a Hampton Inn, with our cousins. The boys are giving their Dad a 90th Birthday lunch on Saturday. I hope we get some sightseeing in. Sunday morning our Aunt and Uncle will pick us up and take us to their place in Scottsdale. I hope we can do some sightseeing in Scottsdale also. We will leave Monday morning and go back to Chicago. Thursday night, at CC, besides info on Matt and Jenifer, I have a visual, if it’s ok with Maureen. Matt was on channel six news, last night, for only 20 seconds, talking about the baseball college world series. I taped it on a VHS. Maureen, if it’s not convenient, I can show the 20seconds or so when I have CC next.
Chicago trip
Tuesday, October 23rd, 2007After much hesitation due to continuing colds we finally went to Chicago on Saturday afternoon. Unfortunately we couldn’t find any Priceline deals at the last minute downtown so we ended up near the airport. Downtown was swarming with people. We had an enjoyable bar visit for a few hours before dinner at the Greek Islands. dinner was tasty(OOPA).
The Westin was a bit of a disappointment. Really chintzy bathtubs not at all four star. When we came out in the morning to our car we had a serious flat. We waited to get someone to change the tire and then went to purchase a new tire. We ended up at a restaurant near there that my folks used to go to for brunch. Really nostalgic for me. We picked up our cousin’s son downtown and drove back.
Came home to a dead mouse(#2). Watched the game till half time last night(aroud 10:30) and was worn out today.
HEARTLAND FILMS
Saturday, October 20th, 2007Dave and I went to see 2 movies last night. Of course all of the movies are good but if you are looking for recommendations keep checking this blog!
We saw The Owl and the Sparrow and the Shorts. I would recommend seeing the Shorts. Everyone of the shorts was worth seeing.
The down side to showing them all together instead of before feature films as they have done in past years is that the program was 2 hours. Then it takes awhile afterwards to reflect on each one in order to appreciate it more fully. The directors for 4 of the shorts were there for a Q & A afterwards. With that many there, the audience asked questions of a more general nature when it would have been more interesting to go more in depth with just one film.
We have a POPS concert tonight but are going to 1 a day Sunday through Tuesday. Wednesday we leave for the Smokies.
Visit
Friday, October 19th, 2007Barb Green and I had a nice conversation club … where was everyone else? Just kidding! Barb called Thursday evening and wanted to know if it was going on somewhere. I brought her up to date on whatever had been posted and let her know when we really were meeting.
Hope everyone enjoys the wonderful weather forecast (and weather assuming we get what they forecast) this weekend.
Did I post somewhere that I was asked to be a bus aide? I would have become an 8 hour employee - 10 sick days instead of 3, family leave days - which I have none, plus bereavement days.(none of this do I really care about).
It would have been convenient — I would have met the bus at Westlane at 7:15 so I could still have walked to and from. I told them I would be interested only if … I wasn’t responsible for getting my own sub on days when I couldn’t do it (dentist appts, hair cuts etc) and I didn’t want to work till 3:30 on days that the children were dismissed at half days.
They found someone else who didn’t have so many “issues”. And I hadn’t even told them that I would need time to change into my walking clothes before and after school!
CC Opinion
Thursday, October 18th, 2007Ladies, I need a yes or no vote. It’s a situation involving Bobby. Bobby and Matt’s good friend, Alex Collins, has a cousin, Eden, who is an Under Grad. at Union College. Both Eden and Bobby tutor. Elliott gave Bobby a big lecture about him being a coach and grad studebt so he needs to watch it with the under grad. ladies. When I asked Booby if he hangs out with Eden he said “NO, I only see her on campus!! I’m a coach and teacher and she is an undergrad. student!!” Don’t you think this is a different situation since we know her cousin Al ( and his whole family) really well.?? I think of it as company for Bobby to go together to sporting events!! What do all of you think?
Diet
Monday, October 15th, 2007Dave and I went to the first of a 5 week program on Low Carbon Diet that was held at Pike Library. Citizens Action Coalition received a grant so there is no cost for the program. At the end they need to report how many pounds of carbon being emitted were reduced by those who attended their programs.
As part of the program we received a tote bag to use instead of paper or plastic when we go shopping, and free CFL bulbs (the spiral shape bulbs). The goal then is by the end of the 5 sessions to change your habits in order to reduce your carbon footprint and thus do your part to save the planet! (help solve global warming etc).
We all know what we need to do — recycle, turn off lights, reduce the amount of trash, short showers, low flow shower heads (I draw the line there!), wash in cold water, change your driving habits, purchase the green power option from IPL.
It is held Sunday afternoon from 3 to 4:30 at Pike. The next one is on Oct 28th. You can either come or I will keep you updated.
Bad news for Carol H — one line asks you to estimate your air miles!
Hopefully, here is the link: www.empowermentinstitute.net

long day
Sunday, October 14th, 2007Bill almost missed out on his opportunity to get his new tooth. Carol will be falling off her chair laughing when I tell the details of this one at CC. I can’t put details on here because I don’t want a written record of my unfeeling comments..
Now for the not so funny part I called an ambulance to get Bill this morning at 7:00a. We stayed until 2:00 and I had planned to go to work all day. He has had a nasty cough and not feeling generally well. As a result this morning his blood sugar was 40(hypoglycemia)so when he spilled an entire cup of coffee on himself he couldn’t figure out why I told him to take his shirt off. I did not know what was wrong but could not get him to stand up to get out of his chair. He is ok now but it was quite scary for a while.
More on field trip
Friday, October 12th, 2007I did a lot of antiquing, in centersville. I found a nice bracelet for $4.00 and a French telephone for $22.00. I was really looking for a Princess telephone I had 20 years ago. It was stolen when our house was robbed the first year we moved in the house. The princess phones, I saw, were around $45.00. When I saw this French phone I just had to have it!! I feel like an old movie star when I talk on my new phone. I remember seeing these phones in the old movies. Now, of course, it’s cell phones. We went to the Gym, in Knightstown, where the movie Hoosiers was filmed. I took pictures. The weather was actually chilly!
Field trip!
Thursday, October 11th, 2007This was the Day Donna and Shel took me on our anual Field Trip to celebrate my birthday. We went to Greenfield, Knightstown, Centerville and Louisville. It was a great dat, temperaturwise. I had an amazing day and will have to continue tomorrow. I;m ehausted!

Fresh Air
Thursday, October 11th, 2007This past Saturday, Dave and I did our errands on our bikes (did I already post this somewhere?). We left at 10 am, stopped at the Post Office and then bought a gift card at Star Bucks before heading up to Clay Terrace for me to look for some slacks (I’m down a size). On the way home we stopped at the Carmel City Center Park for a snack, then another snack at Steak and Shake where we used a coupon that we had for 2 years that was about to expire for a free milkshake (we felt cheap just getting a shake so we split a steak burger). Our last stop was at Habig’s to buy some bulbs that we spent Sunday planting.
I have managed to bike or walk to work 4 out of 5 days this week.
A substitute teacher was fired - I don’t know if it is just from Nora or all of Washington Township. She only did what we all have wanted to do - except her aim was off. She threw a pad of post it notes at a child — if anyone deserved to have the kitchen sink thrown at him, he did. I’d love to know how many sick days this one teacher has (had?). He has had 3 this week and goodness knows how many before this week. A lot of health problems - and he is only 30.
Heard from Kevin … a bear visited his campsite off one of the Shenandoah National Park trails. Kevin is also taking up rock climbing. And this if a child who refused to take his training wheels off his bike!
Rachel is enjoying Denver… went to Rocky Mt. National Park last Saturday.
Barb’s Birthday
Sunday, October 7th, 2007I treated Barb to lunch at Teds (at Trader’s Point) Then we saw the movie “The Jane Austen Book Club. We both recommend it highly. It was very good. A great Chick Flick with a happy ending!! There aren’t many of those movies around. Barb and I were talking about doing something different for CC. Barb read, in the Friday Go, about girly getaways. There is a place in BR where women paint pots and bond. They have , every Thursday night, a ladie’s night and once a month where it gets spiced up with wine tasting, chair massages or Chocolate. THis month it’s Death by Chocolate on Oct. 25th. Would any of you be interested in seeing what November’s Ladie’s special night is? It’s only $6.00.
music in the air
Saturday, October 6th, 2007wow fantastic concert. The music was sublime. The conductor was a hoot…very dramatic. A couple of times he jumped with both feet in the air. The first violinist had very dramatic feet too. He would slide one foot forward and then slightly tap his toe a few times. He was gettin down.
Afterwards we walked to our car north on Meridian to the beat of hip hop and cars boppin to the bass rhythym. Lots of folk downtown for the classic. What a juxtaposition.
Oh news flash I did not go garage saling this week.
Thanks Kathy.
Heartland
Thursday, October 4th, 2007Are any of you planning to go to the heartland film festival this year? We have the schedules at Pike. I’m off Friday the 19th of October, which seems to be the first day so I plan to try to go to a movie that day. in the booklet it says there are discount tickets at Marsh for $6.00 or 10 for $50.00. Wasn’t it that way last year?
Carol,
I’m still planning to go to one of your Poetry nights. Thanks for posting it on our web site. It’s a long time till November so we will just have to stay in contact by computer!
To Susan
Thursday, October 4th, 2007You can pick up the tickets under my name (Kathleen or William Reno), no id necessary. They are connected with our office address, so if they can’t find them, try NorthWest Financial. (When I called to check on them they couldn’t find them under my name.) Enjoy the concert, I expect a review!
